Verheugen ( EC Vice-President ) shows of different chargers. Each one uses a different port.
We have heard a lot of news and buzz about having one single charger type for all the phones in the world. The European Commission is the first mover in setting up the agreement that all the phone manufacturers stick on to one type of mobile phone charger for their devices. So that means you can use the same charger with every new phone . This is a major step towards waste management, as millions of devices are being discarded every year.
Gradually with this move, there is a possibility that the new phones will come without a charger included in the box. In terms of money spent on the device you could possibily save around $10 to $20.
The standard that will be used on the device is a micro-USB port for charging and the principle is USB charging. Till now 10 companies have signed a Memorandum of Understanding. The list includes : Apple, Research in Motion, Nokia, LG, Motorola, NEC, Nokia, Qualcomm, Samsung, Sony Ericsson, and Texas Instruments. The list covers almost 90% of the phone manufacturers in the world.
Can we expect this agreement world over.. soon ?
